Gargoyle Study: Maggie The Cat by evollusive Gargoyle Study: Maggie The Cat by evollusive
I love felines. I love Gargoyles. I love the concept of genetically-altered humans. So of course when the Gargoyles episode "Metamorphosis" came around, I was quite awestruck by the Mutates. If I ever were to be a gargoyle, I would probably want to be a mutate. So much awesomeness! My only gripes: what happened to the tails they initially had? I like tails :( And hey: what's up with those silly "electric eel" powers? Not a fan of the defibrillator hands; that just seems so..."God Mode" or something. Like being a super-strong, winged cat-person wasn't good enough, they had to throw in electrokinesis. Weird.

Gripes aside, Maggie of course was the female of the group. Blonde, tawny colored and probably based on a lion (or just a yellow cat, for that matter), she sort of evolved from a scrawny, rough-drawn winged cat-girl in "Metamorphosis" to this elegant-looking, Venus-like matriarch in later episodes. A nice improvement, I thought. Though I think they changed her voice, and I was sorta attached to that cute scratchy-throat voice thing she had going for her. Meh, oh well :/

Yeah me too! I really liked her look and that she sort of evolved from this frightened girl to this strong Gargoyle; those mutates certainly had a neat story and character design :)

Awesome pic of Maggie! She is an old-time favourite of mine too, both appearance and personality-wise. Always felt for poor Brooklyn - Maggie never seemed to realize he was into her.

And yeah, it was odd how the mutates did not have tails.

Agreed: I thought she was a lovely character that really deserved more screen time! And YES, poor, poor Brooklyn; I always felt so bad for him; it's hard to be rejected, be you human or gargoyle  Thank you for the kind words :)

You are welcome. :)

Thankfully, Brooklyn did find a mate and a family ina  time-displaced adventure that took place in the official comics written after the show ended. Still, I quite liked that dark future story too where she and Demona ended up together... after all, he was attracted to her in quite a few episodes.

Yes I heard he ended up with a rather cute Japanese beaked gar-girl, Katana; good for Brooklyn! :) Though I never did read any of the comics and stopped watching the cartoon after season 2 (perhaps a good thing, since season 3 wasn't supposed to be any good?)

Yeah, the Goliath Chronicles... is best forgotten. The comics  are actually how the story was supposed to continue, according to Greg Weisman. The first episode of S3 is unchanged, but it all gets much better from there on. They even made a spin-off series called "Bad Guys" which has some villains (Fang, Dingo, that japanese Gargoyle who betrayed his clan) being reformed into a strike team.

Nice picture. The way it's explained in the wikia is that after the left in "Metamorphosis" their bodies continued to mutate some more and they lost their tails and their appearance changed to how they looked in "The Cage"

Thank you kindly! And yeah, I noticed in the wiki they had an "explanation" for why their physical features changed so drastically :P While they may have decided to change the look of the mutates for the TV show, at least they were creative enough to come up with clever reason...gotta give 'em credit for that!

Oh, WOW! She looks so lovely and you capture her personality very well.
You did awesomely with the hair, pose and those wings are for dying for.

Although I like the Mutates idea and concept, I still prefer the Gargates  And I agree with you about adding the electric powers: not only it was unnecessary but is also not very logical, if the Mutates need the eel electric skills to gather strength for flight, is illogical use to use it as an external power for which it can be gathered. More strength more time flight. But that's just my humble opinion.
And yes! I did noticed about the missing tails, like you I love tails :P

LOL Carla I'm SO glad you and I are on the same page about the "electric eel" powers...what the heck, right?! And honestly, I have to admit, I can't choose between what type of Gargess I like best; humanoid? mutate? heraldic? beaked? They're all honestly equally lovely to my mercurial eye

I think my favorite are humanoid gargantes, but I like heraldic and beaked as well. Even thought I'm not good drawing beak gargoyles.
Gargoyles are so awesome, I want to be one D:

Aaah that would be great! But the best I can do is make myself close enough to looking like those characters through costume...and hey, sometimes that's just as good! Nothing beats the feeling of walking away from a costume contest with money in your pocket lol :D

I'm sad! I never won a costume contest. I mean, I barely even wear a costume. I hope to dress as a Creepy Doll for Halloween, but I think that's not going to happen.

C'mon Carla! You only live once! Time to get yourself an awesome costume and rock it like you've never rocked a costume before!!! You've got such lovely curves and deep, dark hair; ever consider donning a Catwoman costume? I think you could pull that off brilliantly!

Love it.
I agree the mutates are awesome, although I think they are strong just not as strong as a gargoyle hence when the electric eel powers were added.  I think there was another reason for them as well though, pretty sure it was to stop something else from happening or to keep them from mutating into something else... can't remember.  I always loved Claw though, always wanted to know about his backstory.

It would have been nice to have seen more of Maggie, she was always put in as the damsel in distress, though she is a smart woman.

I don't think the voice actress changed, I think they made her change the voice form a poor homeless woman and then changed it into a woman full of confidence, to make her grow like her character.

The tails were a weird one too, I think though the animators just found them too annoying to deal with, it's one thing for the lizard like tails the gargoyles have, but cat tails are just too much hassle.  At least I would guess that is the reason, I know that's the reason they gave for a Marvel character - well actually they just said her tail could appear and disappear at will, because the artists forgot about it.

Wow thanks much for the nice thoughtful reply! Always good to have a nice conversation about Gargoyles with another fan :)

I really dig Claw as well, and always figure that if I were a mutate, he'd be the mate for me haha ;) He's actually on my "to do" list of gargs to draw...

And yes, tails...those pesky tails! It was probably Tigra or Feral who alternated between being tail-less and having a tail haha :P

You're welcome.  XD I don't get to have many (or any now that I think of it) conversations with other Gargoyle fans.  LOL.

Is he? Amazing! I think he'd be such a good guy to have around, he doesn't seem that into violence unless he is really pushed, but he seems like a sweetheart.

I think it was TJ from the Exile comics who said it to Blink... XD

* or so they say......dun dun DUN!* Lol :D I think what really happened was that someone decided they didn't like the initial look and ended up changing the design pfffttt :P Even so, I too would have liked to seen them actually morph...what a neat animation sequence THAT would have been, right?! :O

Hehehe:)

I've honestly been waiting for someone to pick up the slack and do Maggie's metamorphosis themselves, but nobody ever has. She's kind of like Mona Lisa in TMNT in that regard, both in the fact that they were both interesting characters with which not enough was done, the fact that they both metamorphosed off screen, and the fact that the fan art community has failed me in filling that gap in :D

Actually, the electric eel DNA was to have the mutates develop electrocytes/electroreceptors, which would allow them to generate the near-infinite power to have them glide AND fly, to make up for the lack of biological solar cells, that the real Gargoyles possess in their statue-like hibernation state.

It's possible that the Gargoyle Mutates might eventually develop a bat's ability of echolocation, as well as an electric eel's ability of electrolocation and/or electrocommunication.

Hey thanks much! Love me my mutates, I do!

Outlining is a nifty little trick I just very recently learned and I must say, I quite like it! I'm sorta weird when it comes to backgrounds and often prefer a character to stand alone, so the outline certainly comes in handy for a character-centric person like me! Here's how to do it in Photoshop:

*Select the layer you wanna outline (may have to select and cut/clear the background first)
* Go to the menu at the top and select the "Layer" tab, then -->Layer Style-->Stroke
* Play around with color, size, and style of the stroke; it's a pretty easy little trick that gives art a little extra bit of polish :)

LOL you're right; I probably gave her a wee bit more hair than she should have. But in all honesty, the pictures I looked at had her with..well...a lot of hair! Here's one. [link] (regrettably,I cannot locate the screenshot that shows her with Lady Godiva hair haha) And yes, down here in the Labyrinth, we just let our hair do whatever the HELL it wants lol  Not unlike my hair, I must admit :P
